In the early 1970s, after five years traveling around the world, Vince landed on the island of Japan. That's where he fell in love with the culture and the landscape.

After visiting a number of gardens and temples in Kyoto, it became clear what he wanted to do. Over the next three years, he immersed himself in the culture and trained in the traditional art of Japanese garden design and architecture - apprenticed under Mr. Toueman Sano, at his 500-year-old traditional garden design and landscape firm, Ueto Gardening Company. Mr. Sano is one of the most respected traditional Japanese gardeners of his generation, known internationally for his work with sculptor Isamu Noguchi.

It was under Mr. Sano that Vince learned the craft the old way: plant species, stone setting, arrangement, spatial balance, water features, wood construction. Passed down by hand, the way it had been taught for generations before him. Over 50 years later, it's still the training he builds every garden from.

Outside his landscaping and construction business, Vincent also operates a certified organic farm in the Capay Valley where his family produces award-winning provisions. Same hands, same care - just a different kind of landscape.
